Bert Wouters wins Solvay Award

For development of a microfluidic chip enabling high-efficiency liquid chromatography separation

Postdoc researcher Dr Bert Wouters of the Van 't Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) is awarded the 'Solvay Award' for his groundbreaking PhD research on the development of a microfluidic chip for spatial three-dimensional liquid chromatography. The prize will be presented to Wouters on 23 October in Brussels during the Solvay Public Event on ‘Chemistry for the World of Tomorrow', organised by the International Solvay Institutes.

Bert Wouters developed a microfluidic chip for comprehensive spatial three-dimensional liquid chromatography, a novel concept in multi-dimensional liquid-chromatography. The chip enables migration of analytes to different positions in a three-dimensional body, thus providing unrivalled possibilities for high-efficiency LC separations.

Wouters performed his PhD research in the BioAnalytical Separation Science group of Prof. Sebastiaan Eeltink at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Department of Chemical Engineering), in collaboration with the group for Analytical Chemistry of Prof. Peter Schoenmakers at the University of Amsterdam (HIMS). He is now a postdoc researcher in the Schoenmakers group at HIMS, which forms part of the Centre for Analytical Sciences Amsterdam (CASA).
