Practical matters

Before you decide to apply for a PhD position at the UvA it is good to take these practical matters into consideration.

Housing

It can be a challenge to find a place to live in Amsterdam. Most UvA faculties can offer a limited amount of furnished and unfurnished accommodation to their international staff. Unfortunately, supply is limited and it is not always possible to find suitable accommodation through the UvA.

You can contact the housing officer of the Faculty of Science via the mail address below.

Immigration procedures

Depending on your nationality, you may have to obtain an entry visa (MVV: Machtiging tot Voorlopig Verblijf) and/or a residence permit (VVR: Vergunning tot Verblijf) to be able to enter the Netherlands. The kind of visa or permit required depends on your nationality.

Cost of living

How much money you will need per month depends, of course, largely on the lifestyle you are used to at home. But you will need at least €1000 to €1500 per month to cover your normal expenses. Below you find some sample figures for a PhD fellow.

  • rent of a furnished room: approx. € 500 to € 900 per month
  • food: approx. € 250 per month
  • public transport, bicycle: around € 50 per month
  • insurances: € 100 to € 150 per month
  • entertainment and leisure: € 150 to €200 per month
