Human Centered Multimedia (MSc Information Studies)

Name: Dr. Jacobijn Sandberg

Education: Psychology (University of Amsterdam)

Position at UvA: Lecturer

"Human Centered Multimedia literally focuses on how humans use multimedia applications. What do people need from computers? What kinds of applications are useful for what purposes? We look at technology use from different perspectives; technical, psychological, sociological, organizational. In this Master's programme we not only look at current developments, but strongly focus on the challenges of the future. We already know that modern technology keeps evolving and is doing so at a rapid pace. This is what makes it so exciting. What lies ahead in human computer interaction? And how can we influence these developments? That's what HCM is all about."

"You do not have to be a computer wiz to follow this Master's programme. Of course you need some knowledge of how a computer operates, about internet protocols and web technology. Furthermore, you need to be able and willing to apply mathematics to challenges of information retrieval and data mining. You need a broad knowledge and interest, rather than specific technical skills. However, some knowledge of technology and programming is certainly required. Students with a lack of knowledge in this area can catch up in our pre-Master's programme."

"The job prospects are quite favorable. Our students have no problems finding an interesting job after graduation. Better yet, we sometimes have to encourage our students to graduate, because they've already found a job while still in University! What makes our students interesting for future employers, is their combination of both technical and human-focused skills. Instead of engineers or marketeers, they do not have one particular field of expertise. They can think on a technological level without losing track of human needs. This gives them a unique mix of qualities.'
