Applied Mechanism Design and Big Data
My research is about the way in which business and society can maximise the benefits of insights gained through data analysis. It involves bridging technical requirements (processing of large quantities of data into usable insights) with social requirements (fulfilling social demands in terms of privacy and convenience) and the translation of theory into practice. The latter concerns ensuring that technical and social requirements are met when Big Data systems are set up, and that the insights generated are translated into the needs and wishes of individuals, organisations and society as a whole. One of the main projects I'm running is about early detection of states leading to panic in stadium crowds, specifically in the Amsterdam ArenA.
